CASE STUDY

Emilie Fournet’s Home

Emilie Fournet is an interior designer who set up her interior design studio, Emilie Fournet Interiors, just over six years ago. Specializing in residential interior design for private clients and architectural partnerships, Emilie was born and raised in France but has been living in London for 20 years. Her beautiful Victorian terraced home is in north London and is typical of the era. Emilie lives with her husband Ben and their two children, Orson (10) and Cosima (6).

I first ‘met’ Emilie online four years ago, and her dining space with its flowing abundance of plants mixed with vintage pieces and pops of colour immediately sang to me. She describes her style as eclectic and her home designs are based on the context, emotional reaction and connection to objects, colours and styles. Emilie favours particular periods of style history and this is reflected in her surroundings, with art deco, mid-century modern, antiques and more contemporary pieces all playing their part in the overall look.

As most people do, Emilie started furnishing her home with very few funds. Finding herself in a new city, wanting to live in a space that was functional, attractive and fitted her budget, she bought secondhand and vintage furniture. These pieces were picked for their functional purpose, solid quality and were beautiful in their own way. This wasn’t new territory for Emilie. She learned to know what to buy and how to judge quality from her mother. As a child in France, she travelled with her family to all the flea markets and antiques stores that surrounded her hometown and she is still a regular visitor. Emilie buys on instinct, but will always seek out pieces that reflect her love of mid-century, art deco or Arts and Crafts styles. Over the years, she has come to love the work and care that has gone into these movements; the devotion and skill of the craftsmen who produced furniture during these periods of design is what keeps Emilie going back to the markets of her childhood.
